"During the spiritual marathon of Nocturns, a few monks in the abbey church at Cluny would invariably begin to nod off. This was the cue for the light-bearer, who made the rounds of the chilly choir with a dark lantern (absconsa), to pause beside the drowsy brothers and direct the light toward their faces."

— Katherine Allen Smith, Light and Landscapes in Latin Monasticism

For Advent — the spiritual season dedicated to finding light in the darkness — 10 reimagined absconsas were installed in the Ante-Chapel of Christ's College Cambridge alongside Gregorian chants and thurified incense.

These origami lanterns exploits the way parchment folds, moves, and diffuses light. The series was inspired by imaging techniques used in manuscript analysis, which reveal anatomical features preserved within pages of medieval manuscripts.
